Bukchon is a living residential area. To protect the housing rights of local residents, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has implemented specific management zones. When planning a visit, it is important to check the current restrictions to avoid potential fines and maintain a respectful environment for those living in the neighborhood.

Checking the Time for the Red Zone

Before heading to the Bukchon-ro 11-gil area, first check your planned arrival and departure times. The "Red Zone" implements restrictions during early mornings and late evenings to minimize disturbance. Specifically, tourist visits are restricted from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. the following day. If you find yourself in this zone during these restricted hours, please be aware that a fine of KRW 100,000 may be imposed.

Identifying the Restricted Boundaries

It is helpful to identify exactly which streets are subject to these time-based restrictions. The Red Zone covers approximately 34,000 m2 within Bukchon-ro 11-gil. While other areas like the Orange and Yellow zones are under intensive guidance or monitoring, they do not currently have the same visiting hour restrictions as the Red Zone. Verifying your specific location within the management area can help you plan your walking route more effectively.

Planning Your Transportation

If you are traveling via a chartered bus, you must verify your route through the designated restricted zones. A separate restriction applies to chartered bus traffic in a 2.3 km area encompassing Bukchon-ro, Bukchon-ro 5-gil, and Changdeokgung 1-gil. Unlike the Red Zone, this restriction applies at all times, including weekends and holidays. Please note that violations regarding chartered buses carry higher fines: KRW 300,000 for the first instance, increasing to KRW 400,000 for a second, and KRW 500,000 for a third.

Verifying the Enforcement Schedule

Finally, check the current status of the enforcement period to ensure your plans align with the latest regulations. The rules for the Red Zone (visiting hours) moved from a guidance period (Nov 1, 2024 – Feb 28, 2025) to full enforcement on March 1, 2025. For those managing bus logistics, note that the guidance period for the chartered bus restriction is scheduled from July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025, with enforcement set to begin on January 1, 2026.
